Peace, Joy, and Choice Holiday Party

Seven days a week, all year long, DCAF’s volunteer case managers run our free, confidential helpline. In our last fiscal year, we provided over $135,000 in financial support to cover the funding gap between what patients are able to pay and the full cost of their abortion care. To date, we have never turned away a single person who was eligible for DCAF funding.

At our annual holiday party, you can learn more about DCAF’s work, meet the volunteers and leaders who keep DCAF running, and join us in a toast to — you guessed it — peace, joy, and choice!

Who: You and other reproductive justice supporters in the D.C. area
What: DCAF’s 12th annual Peace, Joy, and Choice Holiday Party
When: Monday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Lost Society (2001 14th St., NW)

gat-dice1-300x300GAME ON. It’s DCAF Game-a-Thon time! Pull out those boards, buzzers, and blocks for our biggest fundraiser of the year and help us raise $55,000 for patients seeking abortion care in the DMV. Our annual spring fundraiser provides more than a quarter of DCAF’s total budget — come out and play for choice!

All you need to do is gather the best Scrabble players you know, register a team, and commit to raising as much money as you can to sponsor your fabulous Boggle crew. Then share DCAF’s work with friends, family, co-workers, and pro-choice buddies and ask for their help to ensure that patients in the DC area have access to safe abortion. And when you’re done, we’ll kick-off the Game-a-Thon for snacks, drinks, and Jenga showdowns.

The games begin on April 30 at 1 p.m. Grab a few friends, sign up, and help us make choice a reality in 2016. Food, prizes, and pro-choice fun — what more could you ask?

Women's History Month Flyer

Women’s History Month Speak-Out

Please join DC Abortion Fund at Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s abortion rights round table in celebration of Women’s History Month. DCAF board president Val Vilott will serve as a panelist.

This is a great opportunity for D.C. residents to speak out on the importance of expanding abortion access. Legislative restrictions on abortion care hurt our community, as so many DCAF callers tell us they are unable to use their Medicaid insurance to help pay for their procedures.

Tuesday, March 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
GWU Hospital Auditorium (900 23rd St. NW)

Drink 4 a Cause

Obvious Child landscape with DCAF link

Obvious Child Screening

Join us for a screening of Obvious Child, a brilliant new comedy about abortion on Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. It’s been called “hilarious, heartbreaking, and totally genius” and “the most winning abortion-themed rom-com ever made.”

We will also have a mixer before the screening at West End Cinema (2301 M St. NW), so stop by early!

Film description: For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her hysterical and relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna winds up unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand, she is forced to face the uncomfortable realities of independent womanhood for the first time. Donna’s drunken hookup – and epic lapse in prophylactic judgment – turns out to be the beginning of a hilarious and totally unplanned journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Rated R.

maxresdefaultRoe at Risk: Fighting for Reproductive Justice

We are pleased to partner with the Alliance for Justice, the New Organizing Institute, URGE and NARAL to host a screening of the documentary Roe at Risk: Fighting for Reproductive Justice.

Narrated by actress and activist Amy Brenneman, Roe at Risk describes the dramatic impact of nationwide attacks on women’s constitutional rights. By sharing the stories of women’s day-to-day struggles in Mississippi and Texas, the video shows the wrenching consequences of radical anti-abortion legislation. At the same time, it documents how women and their allies are fighting back, standing up bravely against politicians who propose laws that threaten the right to reproductive freedom and justice.

Following the video, we will discuss the scope of the attacks, and provide context for the current battles being waged here and across the country.

Peace, Joy, and Choice Holiday Party

You’re invited to DC Abortion Fund’s 9th annual Peace, Joy, and Choice holiday party fundraiser! Thanks to you, our great network of supporters, we have had an incredibly powerful year, and we want to end it on a high note!

In our last fiscal year, over 2,500 women and girls called us, and we gave out over $130,000 to help cover the costs of their abortions. We feel blessed to have your support so we can keep working on the frontlines for reproductive justice. We hope you will join us on December 10 as we celebrate such an amazing year of peace, joy, and choice.

Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Capitale (1301 K St. NW)
$25 suggested cash donation at the door

PLUS … 5% of all drink sales go back to DCAF! Drink specials include $4 domestic beers, $5 import beers, $6 rail cocktails and wine. Light hors d’oeuvres will also be provided. This event is 18+, so please bring your ID.  Capitale is wheelchair-accessible.

After Tiller

After Tiller Screening

We are proud to host a special screening of After Tiller at West End Cinema (2301 M St. NW) on Nov. 3.  Space is limited. Please note that the theater is wheelchair-accessible.

Since the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in May 2009, there are four American doctors left who openly provide third-trimester abortions. After Tiller paints a complex, compassionate portrait of these physicians—Dr. LeRoy Carhart, Dr. Warren Hern, Dr. Susan Robinson and Dr. Shelley Sella—who have become the new number-one targets of the anti-abortion movement.

They risk their lives every day to do this work, which they believe is profoundly important for their patients’ lives. Through in-depth interviews with the doctors, as well as intimate verite scenes from their lives and the patients in their clinics, After Tiller also illuminates the experiences and reasons of women who seek later abortions. Rated PG-13.

Crow After Roe Discussion

We are pleased to host Jessica Mason Pieklo, author of Crow After Roe: How “Separate But Equal” Has Become the New Standard In Women’s Health And How We Can Change That, for a discussion on abortion rights Saturday, October 19.

Pieklo will be joined by Val Vilott, DCAF board president, and Jessica Arons, president of the D.C.-based Reproductive Health Technologies Project. Copies of the book will available for purchase. A portion of all sales will benefit DCAF. Book signing to follow.

Saturday, October 19 at 3 p.m.
Mt. Pleasant Library (3160 16th St. NW)

Crow After Roe examines 12 states that passed anti-abortion laws since 2010, and analyzes how each of these laws are designed to provoke a repeal of Roe v. Wade. Pieklo and co-author Robin Marty demonstrate how these laws create a reproductive health care system that puts women—especially low-income, rural, and those of color—into a separate class with fewer choices or control.

Borrow the book today through DC Public Library, or click here to purchase Crow After Roe on Amazon.
