Once again, the U.S. Congress has overstepped its bounds to take away the rights of women in the District of Columbia. The devastating DC abortion ban is back – and we can’t face this without your help.
The ban, which forbids the District from using locally-raised tax revenues in the manner of our choosing, was upheld yesterday by the House and today by the Senate as a part of the 2012 spending bill.
On top of ever-increasing demand for our assistance, the vote means even more women will have nowhere else to turn. Your contribution today will help us continue to provide a critically-needed service for women in our community.
It’s easy to let this outrage get the better of us. We have been through a great deal in the last year, and this feels like a slap in the face. But too many women in DC, Maryland, and Virginia depend on DCAF for us to give up now.
I am determined to turn my rage into resilience.
We face obstacles at every turn. Congress is hurting vulnerable women with irresponsible policies and stripping away the autonomy of DC’s residents. But this policy is more than just words on a piece of paper. To me and to you, this means real people and real lives that hang in the balance.
I am furious, I am sad, and I am stunned. But I refuse to let Congress gamble with women’s lives. Where they have turned their backs on women, this Fund will not. With your support, we will do whatever it takes to empower women to make their own choices.
