The cost of a first trimester abortion in DC ranges from $500–$700

Even pre-Dobbs, systemic barriers prevented (and continue to prevent) abortion seekers from accessing the care they need. Today, the overwhelming majority of DCAF callers report annual incomes under $25,000, with many reporting under $9,000. Translation: A first-trimester abortion will account for 50–100% of their bi-monthly take-home pay in Washington, DC.

For decades, the abortion access movement has been stitched, glued, and vehemently held together by local abortion funds. Our purpose is to pay for abortions. Period.

FEDERAL FUNDING

Due to the Hyde Amendment, zero federal funds can be put toward abortion care—at any stage in pregnancy. This includes TRICARE, RPCV, CHIP, IHS, and Medicaid.

STATE FUNDING

Without statehood, Congress has final say over DC’s budget—thereby threatening abortion access. In addition, the Dornan Amendment bars DC from using local Medicaid dollars to cover abortion.

INSURANCE

Clinics in DC and Maryland do not accept insurance for procedures after 24 weeks (and many insurance plans don’t cover abortion, period).

National nonprofits

Unlike national organizations, DCAF has zero eligibility requirements and serves a single purpose: to pay for abortions.

Through COVID, the overturn of Roe, and a recession, you—our community—keep showing up.

The COVID-19 pandemic, a looming recession, and the Dobbs Supreme Court ruling placed a triple threat against abortion access. And yet, the DCAF community leveled up in every way imaginable over the past several years—almost entirely through mutual aid. From 2020 to 2022, we increased our total amount pledged nearly six-fold, affording care to those who need it most.
